Problem: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Risk: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
What owners report
Short excerpts of recent complaints, with personal details removed. Full reports are on NHTSA.gov.
Sometimes when i put my vehicle in drive and start driving my vehicle will go into neutral forcing me to pull over, put it in park and turn it off and turn it back on in order for me to drive it again. This happens about twice a month.
Engine stalls no matter what speed i'm going. Happens more often when coming to a stop. It's as if i just turn the key off. When it stalls, i stop and put it in park, turn the key off and start it right back up and take off. It's becoming a dangerous safety concern.
Anytime i go 50+ mph all i can hear is a roaring noise. We have replaced the whole rear end almost 3 weeks ago thinking maybe that was the problem turns out it not. We bought this car almost a year ago so we are unsure if any recalls on it have been taken care of.
